Anambra election: Soludo is APGA’s guber candidate – Supreme Court declares

Three helicopters, 34,587 Police to be deployed

The Supreme Court of Nigeria yesterday affirmed Prof. Charles Soludo as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), in Anambra State.

The Anambra Governorship election will take place on November 6, 2021.

An e-man panel unanimously upheld the judgment of the Kano State Division of the Court of Appeal, which validated the primary election that produced Soludo. The panel, which was chaired by  Justice Mary Odili, also affirmed Victor Oye as the chairman of the party.

The apex court said the Appeal Court’s judgment nullifying the ruling of the Jigawa State High Court on the matter was in order.

Soludo had emerged victorious at the primary election conducted by the Oye faction of APGA in Anambra State. However, the Jigawa State High Court nullified the election and upheld the parallel primary election conducted by the Jude Okeke-led faction of APGA.

The case dragged on to the Supreme Court which upheld the primary election conducted by the Oye faction of the party.

In a related development, the Inspector-General of Police, (IGP), Usman Baba, has said three helicopters and 34,587 police officers would be deployed to Anambra for the State’s Nov. 6 governorship election.

The IGP, who stated this during a meeting with Police officers from the rank of Commissioner and above, said that the over 30,000 officers would consist of conventional police officers, Police Mobile Force, the Counter-Terrorism Unit, Special Forces, Explosive Ordnance Unit, Force Intelligence Bureau, (Interpol), Special Protection Unit and a medical team.

The helicopters would be deployed for aerial surveillance while detachments of Marine Police operatives would also be deployed for an itch-free election in the State.

According to the IGP, the deployment was necessary after the election security threat analysis conducted by the Force Intelligence Bureau, adding that the deployment is to create a conducive and enabling environment that will guarantee the peaceful conduct of the election.

Baba warned subversive elements and political actors who would want to adopt undemocratic and illegal means to achieve their aspirations to bury such thoughts.
